The game that fills in the missing information from the anime with the same title, Dance with Devils! I played the game without watching the anime, so these are thoughts from someone who played the game first before watching the anime

This is a spoiler-free review, provided that you have an idea of the story from watching the anime ・´∀`・)

Tachibana Ritsuka is just an ordinary high school at Shikou Academy, until one day, she gets called by the student council president, Kaginuki Rem, because apparently, she has broken some school rules. Little does she know that the student council is composed of devils, and they called her to get information about the “Forbidden Grimoire,” a book of magic that holds powers enough to take over the world. After her mom was kidnapped by suspicious people (vampires), and she looks for clues about the mom’s whereabouts, Ritsuka suddenly finds herself in the company of the student council members, while her older brother Lindo tries to keep her away from them. Where is the Grimoire? Which path will Ristuka choose, devil, or human? Why is Rem’s voice so hot? What’s up with that random red color on Lindo’s shirt? What brand of eyeliner does Urie use? Why can’t Mage wear his blazer properly? Why tf is Shiki is so creepy?? And how can Roen, Pomeranian and human form, be so cute???

Kaginuki Rem (CV: Saitou Souma) is the canon guy who got a fifth ending, thanks to the anime. In the human world, he’s under the guise of being the Shikou Academy student council president and heir of the Kaginuki family, although in reality, he’s actually a devil and the heir of the powerful Arlond family. He’s a no-nonsense guy who puts his Arlond family obligations above anything else. Despite that, I found that he’s actually the most “human” among the guys, which is reflected in the scenes of his route that totally reeks of high school shoujo manga…. with scenes like saving Ritsuka from falling from the library bookshelf ladder, buying cellphone straps together, and “accidentally” being partners at the school dance party. This is really weird for me, because the other guys’ route had a lot of devil/past/whatever stuff going on, while we don’t get much info about Rem, except for the fact that he’s an Arlond heir. Nonetheless, his route is really cute (I told you, it’s very shoujo-ish), but sadly, all his endings are anticlimactic (´ー`) (well he does get Ritsuka in the anime, so I guess, fair enough?)

Tachibana Lindo (CV: Hatano Wataru) is the DanDevi Rejet oniichan! He is Ritsuka’s older brother, though not really…… At the start of the game, he just came back from his studying in London as an *gasp* exorcist! Although I say that rather than an exorcist, he’s actually an exorSISCON. As expected from the Rejet oniichan who locks his imouto inside their house, because he thinks that it’s a way of saving her! But I’m not complaining, since that type of oniichan is actually what I was looking forward in Lindo’s route (✧≖‿ゝ≖). Sadly, Lindo’s siscon-ness didn’t meet my expectations, because he was actually pretty normal, especially in his human route. His devil route is a bit scary, though it isn’t enough for me (gimme more siscon Wacchan! (>A<)ノ). But really, rather than big siscon that I expected, Lindo’s a very kind (and normal) older bro that cares so much for his younger sis.

Sogami Urie (CV: Kondo Takashi) is the fabulous flirt who calls girls as 蝶々. In the human world, he’s the student council vice president, though he’s actually an incubus, apart from being the first son of the Fuza family. Urie is also Rem’s childhood friend, so he’s pretty loyal to his osananajimi dono. I didn’t like Urie at first, all because he’s grouped with the idiot trio. Fortunately, his lady killer moves really got me later on in his route, that he even became my second favorite boy in the game (/ w\) (he’s so close to being first too!). You see, the usual first impression of Urie is a typical playboy, but wait until he shows his sweet (and cute!) side and you’ll surely fall in love with him (*´▽`*♥. Also, I think he’s the most beautiful among the guys ww

Nanashiro Mage (CV: Kimura Subaru) is the oresama character who thinks he’s the greatest existence ever, though he’s actually just a gullible little shrimp that believes in lies made up by Shiki and Urie. He thinks too highly of his self, often asking Ritsuka if she has fallen in love with him even more, even though it’s very obvious that she actually wants him out of her sight. That said, I still found his route rather cute, especially his human end (ノ*゚▽゚*). I have to say thhta I do not like his character design though (because seriously, does he think it’s cool not to wear his blazer properly? ಠ_ಠ), so sadly, it kind of didn’t help in me liking Mage any further.

Natsumezaka Shiki (CV: Hirakawa Daisuke) is the resident Rejet kimoi character. And yeah, SHIKI IS SERIOUSLY THE WORST uggghhhhhhh. All throughout his route, I was disgusted like, “wtf omg why is he doing this hell no wtf !!!” Rejet, is it sin not to have a kimoi character in any of your games?? ಠ_ಠ There was one chapter in his human route when he did try to redeem his self, but NO, Shiki. I have had enough of you and your acting as a good guy won’t change what I think of you. Don’t even get me started on his devil route because ugghh I don’t want to think about it again. To give you an idea, Shiki is do-S + do-M + yandere, and it resulted to one hell of a disaster character. His fangirls are also equally as kimoi! And to top it all, he’s voiced by Hiradai, that guy with a dangerous voice when combined with a dummy head mic !! So yeah, Shiki’s voice was creepy af and I had to turn off his voice midway through playing his route, never to turn it on again for the rest of the game.

Roen (CV: Suzuki Tatsuhisa) is my Dance with Devil best boy! (´ε` )♡ He’s a Cerberus, and in the human world, he sometimes goes by the form of a cute little Pomeranian dog (too cute! Ahh now I want a Pomeranian too! (ノ*゚▽゚*)ノ). He was first introduced as Rem’s pet dog, until he revealed that he’s actually a  VERY loyal servant to the previous devil king, Maxis. Roen talks very politely, though it’s still pretty obvious that he’s looking down at Ritsuka. In any case, he does know a lot, and his loyalty can’t be questioned. I was neutral with Roen at first (because I didn’t know what to expect of him), but I eventually liked him, after knowing about his past and seeing him slowly warm up to Ritsuka (๑´ლ`๑). I really like his route, both devil and human!! >w< Also, have I mentioned that Roen is DanDevi best boy? ww

The heroine Ritsuka is pretty okay, since she does oppose the guys or the bad guys, when she feels that they’re on the wrong. I especially love the human choices (except in Lindo’s route), because they reflect that Ritsuka can fight the guys if she wants. The devils choices are mostly submissive, but it’s not really a problem. As for the other characters, I say Azuna is a real good girl best friend. Meanwhile, it’s really interesting that the way Jek (I prefer his name being written as “Jake” though (´ー`)) talks is rather feminine ww Jek may be a villain, but I did like him once, in one of Lindo’s devil ends *wink*wink*

My character ranking is Roen > Urie > Rem > Lindo > Mage >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shiki

That was a good game! Although it probably can’t be compared to my favorite otome games with really good stories, I still enjoyed Dance with Devils.

The story was interesting enough to keep me seated for hours (this is coming from someone who played the game first before watching the anime), and I found that most of ends are satisfying. My only complaint, I think, is that fight scenes weren’t written well enough, though it’s probably just me having high standards high standards, thanks to playing Hyakka Hyakurou just recently. One example is this Lindo vs Rem scene, and it was so tacky, I can only hear punching and grunting sounds, with no complementing explanation or narration or whatsoever. I swear, I could have thought of that fight as something else, if not because of the previous context pfft

On the other hand, I like most of the guys! The “devil” sides of the three idiots really put me off at first, but I eventually understood that they really are devils, so that can’t be helped. Also, they (except Shiki!) showed their sweet and cute sides later on, so I’m pretty satisfied. On the other hand, Rem and Lindo are sweet, right from the start, while Roen is forever my bae (´ε` )♡ Just forget about Shiki, please. He’ll just ruin the good reputation of Dance with Devils.

Now, since the anime was aired first before the game out, people suggest watching the anime first. In my case, however, I don’t think that I’ll enjoy the game as much as I did, if I was already spoiled of stuff because of watching the anime first. The revelations (especially in Lindo’s route, or stuff like where the Grimoire really is) won’t be as surprising to me, so I’m really glad I chose not to watch the anime before the game. On the other hand, I believe that watching the anime first will show you what to expect, so it will make more people interested in the game (the guys in the final episode were clearly saying, “If you want to date us, then play the game!” ww). Whatever the case, people have different likes, so yeah.

Still, I do think that seeing both anime and game is a must, for a more complete (and satisfying!) DanDevi experience. (I love the character songs in the anime!) For people who watched the anime but haven’t played the game, details about Urie, Mage, Shiki, and Roen weren’t in the anime, so I highly suggest playing the game >w<

As for the game system, I think I have no problems, except for the fact that saving and opening the log are slow. Apart from that, the skip function is fast enough, and there’s a jump to next choice option, though it jumps every text, including unread, so I had to be careful in using it.

Another feature of the game is the splitting of routes into devil or human, which is determined by choosing either human or devil choices. I noticed that for the devil guys, the devil choices have Ritsuka being submissive, while for Lindo, the devil choices have Ritsuka defying his siscon antics. So I guess that for Lindo, you really have to show him that you’re an obedient little sister to make Lindo stay human ww

That art on the other hand, is the game’s major turn-off. I’m not saying that the art isn’t nice, but they could’ve made it even better in the game if they made Maeda draw the CGs too. Though I guess, one advantage of using anime art for the game is that it’ll be an easier transition from anime to game or game to art for viewers/players; no cringing because of art downgrade or upgrade involved! ww Meanwhile, the music is okay, but some tracks don’t loop well, and it’s kind of bothering how the BGM very OBVIOUSLY ends and starts midway a scene.

Lastly, I know that this is a Rejet game, but I wasn’t informed beforehand that THE VOICES ARE RECORDED USING DUMMY HEAD MIC. Imagine my surprise when Saitou Souma’s suddenly whispered on my left ear, like, omg I TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT THIS??! Not that I’m complaing though! (///w///)

Extra: The last trophy obtained from collecting all the cards made me rage because I don’t close the game app! To get that card, you have to open and close the game for 100 times >A< I had to patiently do that while watching the DanDevi anime ;~;

For those playing the game without watching the anime first (like me), I suggest this play order: Urie à Shiki à Mage à Lindo/Rem à Roen. For those who have watched the anime already, I guess the play order won’t matter since half of the stuff in the game were already revealed in the anime. Regardless, I highly recommend playing Roen for last because his endings are >w<

I honestly don’t know to whom I can recommend the game, but nonetheless, I did enjoy playing! (Just don’t ever mention Shiki). If you liked the anime, the game will fill in the missing information. On the other hand, if you haven’t watched the anime, I suggest playing the game first (´^ω^`)

    • I buy these games from Amiami or CDJapan :D Check out my “where to get games” widget for links. But yes, they are in Japanese.

  2. First off, thanks for this review!
Now, I’m sorry, I know you probably don’t wanna talk about it, but I’m really interested in Shiki.
What were the worst moments in his route?
    Also, does he actually have fangirls ̶w̶t̶f̶’̶s̶ ̶w̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶t̶h̶o̶s̶e̶ ̶p̶e̶o̶p̶l̶e̶ ?

    • Can I say that everything in his route is the worst? ww
Though I think that his Devil route endings are the worst of the worst. I can’t say it here in detail because it’ll be a spoiler, buy to give you an idea, he went on a killing spree in that route.
His fangirls are big masochists (ノ_<)
