Otome gaming is an expensive hobby, regardless of the platform: whether PS Vita, PC, or mobile. Although I used to be not familiar with how much mobile otome games cost (because I don’t play them), this time, I’m playing Mystic Messenger (hottest game atm) so I finally have the right to trash talk about how expensive otome mobage are… but are they?

In this post, I’m going to calculate the least amount of hourglasses you have to spend to play Mystic Messenger in one go, and see if mobile otome games really are more expensive than PS Vita otome games (as per popular belief)!

When I first played Mystic Messenger, I raged at how I can’t play the game in one go without spending hourglasses that are freaking expensive. I mean, why can’t we just buy the whole game as ONE PACKAGE, WITH ALL THE ROUTES AND ENDINGS, like how it is for PS Vita/PSP/PS2 games??

But now I realize that I was ignorant. I am sorry.

That’s not how you play Mystic Messenger. It should be played like this:

  1. Go on with your daily life while waiting for chats to open
  2. You can set alarms so you won’t miss a chat
  3. Read the chats
  4. Stay awake until 3am or wake up at 3am to read the infamous 3am chats
  5. Repeat for the next day, until day 11, when you can finally have a good night’s sleep because there’s no 3am chat
  6. Repeat in the next routes

Please take note that the steps above are the peasant’s and/or patient person’s way of playing MysMes. If you’re a rich kid and/or a busy person, you can always play routes in one go (yes, without waking up at 3am) by spending hourglasses. The question is: How many hourglasses do you need to play the whole game?

I calculated, and it’s more or less 2000 hourglasses to unlock deep route, play all routes in one go, and unlock the all extra stories. Of course, you have to strategize your play order and where you save so it’ll be easy to just load and go back when you want to get the bad ending or start on a new route.

I made a plan on how to play the whole game in one go while using the least amount of hourglasses as possible. This isn’t how I played the game, (because I told you, I was clueless of the game system at first), but I’ve tried some parts in one route and it works. Well, if I were to restart the whole game, this will be my gaming plan.

This is the step-by-step guide:

Note 1: There will only be four save slots for non-VIPs, so we should use these four save slots wisely. You should spend 50 HGs to unlock a fifth save slot, which you will use to save your every current progress while playing (and be on the save side in case your game app screws up and you need to reinstall). You will also use the save slot five in getting the Normal Ends.

Note 2: (IMPORTANT) Guests will not attend if you don’t read their third (and last) email replies. This will be the key to getting the normal end. While playing through a route, make sure to answer the guest emails correctly. A successfully invited guest is equal to one hourglass in the extras, so invite as much you can. But, as I said, do not to open the third email replies of the guest yet, however tempting it is. Make sure to save at slot 5 first before the party starts at Day 11, 12:00. Then, open the third emails, and start with the party. You will also use slot 5 to unlock the Normal end, later.

Note 3: Jumin and Seven route can only be played at deep route (which costs 80 HGs).

Note 4: This guide is best used along with the walkthrough made by Otome Obsessed.

Zen route

  • Start first on casual route, at exactly 00:00
  • -20 HGs unlock all Day 1 chats. Read. Make sure to get equal amount of hearts, as much as possible, for Zen, Yoosung, and Jaehee.
  • -30 HGs unlock all Day 2 chats. Read. Make sure to get equal amount of hearts, as much as possible, for Zen, Yoosung, and Jaehee.
  • -30 HGs unlock all Day 3 chats. Don’t read the chats yet.
  • Save at slot 1. Load this later, when starting on Yoosung/Jaehee route (save 50 HGs!)
  • Read Day 3 chats. Pick the choices that give Zen hearts
  • -30 HGs unlock all Day 4 chats. Read. Pick the choices that give Zen hearts.
  • Game branches to Zen route.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 5 chats. Read. Pick the choices that give Zen hearts.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 6 chats. Don’t read the chats yet.
  • Save at slot 2. Load this later, when getting Zen bad end 1. Continue reading while picking all choices that give Zen hearts.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 7 chats. Read. The game branches after the 21:12 chat, and will continue to tread the good end if enough Zen hearts were collected.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 8 chats. Don’t read the chats yet.
  • Save at slot 3. Load this later, when getting Zen bad end 2. Continue reading while picking all choices that give Zen hearts.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 9 chats. Read until the game branch after the 11:24 chat, while picking all the choices that give Zen hearts..
  • Save at slot 4Load this later, when getting Zen bad end 3. Continue reading while picking all choices that give Zen hearts.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 10 chats. Read while picking all the choices that give Zen hearts. The game branches after the 23:16 chat.
  • Be patient. Don’t use hourglasses to unlock Day 11 chats since there’s only one, at 8am. The RFA party will start at 12:00. But you can still use HGs, if you’re impatient…
  • Read 8am chat once it opens, and as per Note 2 above, do not open the third emails without a final save at slot 5.
  • Party!! → GOOD END.
  • -20 HGs unlock Zen after ending.
  • Load save slot 2. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Zen hearts → BAD END 1*
  • Load save slot 3. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Zen hearts → BAD END 2*
  • Load save slot 4. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Zen hearts → BAD END 3*
  • Load save slot 5. Do not read the emails and go straight to the party → NORMAL END

Total HGs used for Zen route: 430

But, you may find out that you can actually save another 50 HGs if you’re playing throughout the day. Still, it depends on your playing speed (i.e. slow).

*Depending on the time of the day when saves 2, 3, and 4 are loaded, the number of chats that are open will be different. You may have to wait in case some chats are still not open before the game branch. You can use -50 HGs to unlock another 24 hours worth of chat if you’re impatient, but of course, that’s not recommended. In any case, it doesn’t matter if you miss chats after the save, since your goal this time is to get as less hearts as possible to trigger the bad end. Just read them without using hourglasses and you’re good to go.

Yoosung route

  • Load slot 1.
  • Read Day 3 chats. Pick the choices that give Yoosung hearts.
  • -30 HGs unlock all Day 4 chats. Read. Pick the choices that give Yoosung hearts.
  • Game branches to Yoosung route.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 5 chats. Read. Pick the choices that give Yoosung hearts, BUT, make sure that those are the choices that say that “I am not Rika/I can’t be Rika’s replacement.” Choices that suggest “I can be Rika’s replacement” also give Yoosung hearts but they lead to bad end.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 6 chats. Don’t read the chats yet.
  • Save/overwrite at slot 2. Load this later, when getting Yoosung bad end 1. Continue reading while picking all the choices that give Yoosung hearts, but not choices that suggest “I can be Rika’s replacement.”
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 7 chats. Read until the game branch after the 14:44 chat, while picking all the choices that give Yoosung hearts.
  • Save/overwrite at slot 3. Load this later, when getting Yoosung bad end 2. Continue reading while picking all choices that give Yoosung hearts,
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 8 chats. Read while picking all the choices that give Yoosung hearts. The game branches after the 19:29 chat.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 9 chats. Don’t read the chats yet.
  • Save/overwrite at slot 4Load this later, when getting Yoosung bad end 3. Continue reading while picking all choices that give Yoosung hearts.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 10 chats. Read while picking all the choices that give Yoosung hearts. The game branches after the 8:59 chat.
  • Party!! → GOOD END.
  • -20 HGs unlock Yoosung after ending.
  • Load save slot 2. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Yoosung hearts → BAD END 1*
  • Load save slot 3. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Yoosung hearts → BAD END 2*
  • Load save slot 4. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Yoosung hearts → BAD END 3*
  • Load save slot 5. Do not read the emails and go straight to the party → NORMAL END

Total HGs used for Yoosung route: 350

Jaehee route *I haven’t played this route yet so there may be some mistakes in this guide. Nonetheless, this is how I plan to play Jaehee route.

  • Load slot 1.
  • Read Day 3 chats. Pick the choices that give Jaehee hearts.
  • -30 HGs unlock all Day 4 chats. Read. Pick the choices that give Jaehee hearts.
  • Game branches to Jaehee route.

  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 8 chats. Read while picking all the choices that give Yoosung hearts. The game branches after the 17:16 chat.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 9 chats. Don’t read the chats yet.
  • Save/overwrite at slot 4Load this later, when getting Jaehee bad end 3. Continue reading while picking all choices that give Jaehee hearts.
  • -50 HGs unlock all Day 10 chats. Read while picking all the choices that give Jaehee hearts. The game branches after the 16:22 chat.
  • Party!! → GOOD END.
  • -20 HGs unlock Jaehee after ending.
  • Load save slot 2. Make sure to avoid picking choices that give Yoosung hearts → BAD END 1*

Total HGs used for 707 route: 350

After finishing Seven’s good end, I heard that you will be able to unlock two extra routes, which cost 70 HGs each.

So overall, the total HGs you will use, if you want to play the game in one go, while getting all ends is:

50 HGs to unlock save slot 5
430 HGs for Zen route
350 HGs for Yoosung route
350 HGs for Jaehee route
510 HGs for Jumin route (includes 80 HGs for unlocking the deep route)
350 HGs for Seven route
140 HGs for the extra routes

GRAND TOTAL: 2180 HGs

As I said, you can still save 50 HGs per route if you play slow and take one day per route to play. That will help you save as many as 250 HGs.

Thus, I think the 2000 hourglasses package that cost $45.99 is enough to full complete the game in one go, without the frustration of waking up at 3am. You already get free 30 HGs when you start the game (this is 850 HGs for people like me who downloaded the game during the first week of its release, but that promo already expired). Also, you can earn hourglasses in the chat, exchange hearts for hourglasses, and get hourglasses per guest successfully invited (total guests is 71). Cheritz is also generous enough to give free hourglasses whenever there’s a maintenance or update.

Take note that you will have to resist the temptation of calling the characters. I know some of their calls are worth it, but I don’t think that those are important to the story, so I’d rather not call.

You really just have to strategize and be careful not to make mistakes during save. I believe that $45.99 is not an expensive amount for an otome game like this, which will give you hours of fun. (I think my average is 5 hours per route, but this time frame includes my livetweeting). What’s best is that you can even play this game for free, if you’re patient enough ww

(And of course, you can also buy the VIP package ($79), which will give you the maximum number of save slots, 1000 HGs,and calling card for everyone!)

  1. For equal amounts of hearts in the casual, does that mean none for Seven and Jumin when in the casual parts?
Also for when you say pick all the choices for X hearts, does that mean avoid everyone else’s hearts?

  2. Hi Alyssa, Thanks a lot to you for this page it’s a very brilliant strategy. It’s sooo helpful for dummies like me. Haha xD *praise the lord*
But i’ve a question, what if i just save the day 3, 6, 8 and 9 before the chat start without spend a HG to open the all day chat? Is it possible too?
And 2nd question, is it right when we want to load the game, the current time must same with the last time we save? Thanks again for your help. ^^

    • Itanayu, do mean to use those days as a starting point? Yes you can do that. I did it really slow (this is despite having bought the VIP, I just really enjoy the game and the real time play since I don’t have hrs in the evening to dedicate) and did just that. I’ve learned try at the very least to get the chats for my character’s routes. If you look at the blog, there are some chats that give like 1-3 hearts max and that’s just not worth it (especially chats with V in it). If you get up to 50% done you’ll probably still be okay.

Oh as for loading chat times, load either on or after your save time. If you load before it will read it as the next day at that time I believe since you can’t go back in time in the game. So… hmmm if you did that you’d get the next full days worth of chats? Hmm but I guess you’d have to wait a day for that to be worth doing rather than doing the 50 hgs… hmm I might need to experiment with that one. You’ll see before you load, it shows you the save, it’s date and time and what will load after with its date and time. Hope that’s not to confusing and helps ^_^

  3. Uh, I’ve never played a mobile otome game before and I’m so confused… Do I really need to stay up to 3AM to not miss anything?? R u kidding me

    • You can unlock the chats so you don’t have to stay up until 3am, provided that you have enough hourglasses (you can also buy these hourglasses).

    • Lol no you don’t! You just have to read the chat before the next chat opens. So if you wake up early like I do it’s no prob otherwise you can set an alarm. But don’t worry, the middle of the night chats are not that important to participate in anyway (except for the chat on like day 3 or 4 with the whole coffee thing in the casual route. That’s just hilarious, and if you’re gonna spend HGS on a call, do it for after that chat to call Yoosung, so worth it and it’ll wake you up lol! ^_^

      • but then they’ll miss the 1am and 2am and it being important or not is subjective to the viewer when actually important things sometimes happen like in the deep route. Also the coffee thing wasn’t actually important to the plot and casual routes aren’t all that important to the plot either

  4. what happens if you change the time on your phone and back? does cheritz have a way of telling that you did that? also if they don’t, if you change the time on your phone back, do you lose your data?

    • You might get your account banned because they think you are hourglass farming so they give you an option to reset it every now and then.

  5. I opened a 3rd reply mail on the 4th day and I just read this after replying to the mail. Will i get a bad ending???

  6. I actually don’t stay up to 3:00 am to chat, I change the timings in my phone. So, no probs

    • Don’t be surprised if they ban you haha, I read somewhere on Cheritz’s tumblr blog that changing the time of your phone is game abuse;;

    • did they ban you yet? and also, how many time did you change your phone’s time and if you make time correct, what happened? did your chats gone or what???? I need answers haha

  7. Hello there! I am from the Philippines too (Cebu). ^^ Thank you for the guide especially on the email part. It really is a big help!!! ( tho I hoped that I’ve read this guide before opening the 3 replied emails, well anyways…) I’m on the seventh day of my first route and I have collected around 56HGs (without converting the hearts I’ve collected into HG) and I just wanna know if this is the normal amount you get (without spending money on it) while patiently playing the game? How much HGs should I collect more in order to unlock important parts in the story (And as much as possible I want to avoid spending money in it). Because I really want to unlock the other parts like the deep story and the secret story, etc.

    • Hello! I’m not sure about the normal amount of HGs you can collect in a route since I believe the HG drop is random. As for the amount of HGs you need in order to unlock everything, the least is: 80 HG to unlock deep route, and 240 HG to unlock all the after and secret stories. Any excess HG you need (like, to load save slots) depends on how you play the game.

  8. Hi! I’m currently new to this game and I’m planning to buy the VIP package but I’m thinking how much I’m going to cost overall the shipping and stuffs like that and it’s my first time to buy online. xD

As I’m scrolling to the comment section I found out that you’re from Philippines and so do I (I’m from Zamboanga City btw) and what’s the best shipment companies to buy the VIP package?

    • I’m not sure since I no longer have any plans to but the VIP package ;;; A friend chose EMS shipping but she got taxed at customs for about 1k :((

  9. Hi, there~ Thank you so much for these lovely tips~ I just read that you’re from the Philippines, and I am too! Actually, it’s my first time buying things online. I decided to buy the VIP package using K-packet as a way for shipping last week. I would just like to ask if I have to pay something very big for the customs? And if I do have to pay taxes for it, what do you think is the estimation of the taxes that I will be paying? BTW I’m here from Baguio~ Thanks!!!

    • I don’t know how K-packet works, but for packages from Japan, I don’t get taxed, except for the P112 post office fee. I heard that this is different from places near the Customs office in Pasay though, as they usually need to pay fees calculated from the price of the package they get. Since you’re from Baguio, I think in your case, the post office will just ask for a P112 and you’ll be good to go. Hope this helps! ^_^

      • Oh! Thank you so much! I was so confused about it and that I may end up paying another 2k for the customs. You see, someone told me that spending more than $50 will cost me to pay a lot for the customs, its good that’s not the case. But for future reference, what is the best shipment to choose from when buying something from Japan? I plan to buy something there in the near future you see lol. :3

        • Only packages that cost above 10k Php are taxed :D For shipping from Japan, I always choose Registered SAL because it’s cheap while being a safe option, considering that you will be given a tracking number. The package usually arrive in 2-3 weeks (though the fastest I experienced with SAL is 8 working days). EMS is also a good option because it’s fast, but I don’t recommend it since it’s very expensive and Customs LOVES retaining EMS packages :(

          • Oh is that so~ Ok then! I also heard bad things about EMS regarding the customs thing so thank goodness I didn’t choose that option. Though I do have one more question (OMG Sorry!). I wrote that I want my package to be delivered to my address, will the post office deliver it to me or I have to go there myself?

            • It depends on your post office. Our town post office doesn’t have a postman that delivers straight to the address, so the postmaster always contacts me whenever I have to pick up a package at the post office. When I was living in Manila though, the Central Post Office delivers my packages straight to our doorstep.

  10. Hi Alyssa !
Sorry for one more qn .
May i know that after complete one route in casual mode using your saved slot method , will these saved slots disappear when i restart the game in deep mode ?
Or lets say im playing in casual mode halfway and i change to deep mode , can i go back and fro both mode ?

    • You can go back and fort between the casual/deep route, as long as you don’t overwrite your saves :D

  11. Hi ! Im really grateful for your walk through !
    I have one qn :
You mention on Note 2 that we can only answer till 2nd email for all guests up to the 10th day am i right ?
Then save the 11th day on slot 5 . And reply all 3rd emails on that 11th day for good ending correct ?
    But i read on the walkthrough made by Otome Obsessed . They mention {It many take days from some guests to get back to you. I had guests confirming they would come and being marked complete, the day of the party. Be patient.}
So is it safe to reply 3rd emails on the 11th ?

    • After the third mail, there will no longer be any reply option, so don’t worry. Just reply after the second email, and leave the third email unopened until the 11th day ^_^

      • Ok . Thanks a lot ! I really appreciate your guide . Currently still at Day 2 . But already addicted to it . I tried using normal playing ( waking up at 3am for one chat XD ) and i was almost late for work today 😂😂😂

        • I agree it’s a very addicting game ;;w;;
I just finished the final and fifth route today so I’ll probably update this guide soon

  12. HI, in your guide. it says do not open the 3rd email from guests? So does that also mean I have to postpone my 3rd and last reply to them and save it until Day 11 comes?

    • Yes. There will no longer be any reply option after the third email, so all you have to do is save reading/opening them until Day 11.

  13. […] of some pay by route mobile otome. In fact there is a detailed cost breakdown of the game over at It’s a Wonderful World, this blogger outlines the total number of Hourglasses and cash needed to complete the game in one […]

  14. Thank you for the helpful guide!
Would you please advise me on the following queries.

For example I’m playing the game normally without spending HGs to unlock all day chats.

Is it possible for me to do like this to get all the endings?
    (using only 1 save slot)

    – Save Day 6 to Slot #1
    – Play Day 7 to get BE-1
    – Load Day 6 to continue playing until Day 8, save & overwrite at Slot #1 again.
    – Play Day 9 to get BE-2
    – Load Day 8 again and play until passing the safe point on Day 9, then save & overwrite at Slot #1.
    – Play Day 10 to get BE-3
    – Finally load previous safe Day 9 and proceed to Day 11 for GE and NE?

    Thank you! ; w ;

    • Yes, absolutely! I think this method more cost-effective since you don’t have to unlock an extra save slot. I just prefer seeing the good ends first before the bad end ahahaha XD

  15. Hi! I’m a newbie of this game ^^” Like eg zen’s route occupies slots 1-5 right and if like i finished the good end, 3 bad ends and the normal end. I can next proceed to Yoo Sung’s route. So do I overwrite Yoo sung’s slot 2 over Zen’s slot 2 gameplay?

    • Yes, just overwrite since you won’t be needing them anymore ^_^

  16. Hello! Thanks for the Mystic Messenger materials, I had a pleasure reading them.

Can I ask you a forward question? What country are you from? I’m just curious because I’m from an unstable third world country (Russia), and a currency rate makes MM an extremely expensive game for me. I just chose to play through 2 routes and I’m not going to play the whole game (I’ve already spent too much money on it, it was to hard for me to wake up at night etc).
The first 2 Cheritz games are sold on Steam and Steam has special prices for poor trashy countries so I can afford bying games easily from time to time))

    • Hi! I’m from the Philippines. To be honest, MM really is an expensive game if you compare it to the price of Nameless or Dandelion on steam. However, if you compare it to the prices of importing a Japanese vita otome game, or with other mobile otome game, I think the price of MM is pretty standard. So I guess it just depends on which you are comparing the game with?

  17. thanks for the guide! im having trouble getting the bad ends though. i reloaded my save slot 2 for zenny’s route, but even when im going down all the chats (repeating these are taking foreverrr) and choosing the “wrong” options, it’s still going on to the next day (day 8), asking me if i want to pay with hourglasses to see the next days chats.. this is gonna take forever?
When does each bad end unlock? And is there a faster way to unlock them?

    • Hi! At what time did you save? Maybe you have already collected enough hearts in the previous chatrooms so even if you choose the wrong options in the succeeding chatrooms, you are bound to continue to the good end. I think the best way is to continue from a chatroom that is at least Day 6 00:00 or earlier

  18. Hi, I was searching on how to play the game in 1 go and came across this. Never completed or played Otome games much but this got me hooked…and distracted. I suppose it’s because it’s like a real-time messenger. I’m aiming for all good ends for now and I could just try bad ending when I feel like it. So I’m losing patience and time for sleep so thanks for this guide.

Um, just a question, if I unlock the days to participate in all chats, how would the emails/replies of guests be affected somehow? Like how does it work? I am in the middle of Yoosung’s route and i wanna finish it all fast by buying HGs but what about the emails? How can you attain the required amount of guests to have a good end?

    • Hi! Glad the guide is of help ^_^
Emails will pop out once in a while after you complete a chatroom, regardless of the time you play them, so just check out the email area every time you finish reading a chat.

  19. This is a really good guide. I’ve been doing this sort of thing to conserve hourglasses and replay the routes.

However I really must disagree with the part about not calling the characters. The phone calls are at least half the game, if not more, as far as character depth and enjoyment of their company. Why not just buy the pack of calling cards so you can spam them with phone calls? I think the story has more impact when you are more emotionally invested in the characters, but I suppose some people don’t totally love listening to voices as much as others. You do get some incoming calls, but it wasn’t enough for me. Plus some bad ends have their own outgoing calls that built on those ends.

I guess the player has to ask themselves how much do they want out of the game, and how much it will cost. I got the VIP cuz it seemed worth it since you get the cards and HG (and other cool stuff.) but it is true you can get the main point and fun out of the game by doing this guide and maybe just speedplaying less days and not calling. There are a lot of players that were satisfied with that much. And with patience you can replay it again to enter chats you missed the first time around.

Though if you want to go all in, get the calling cards, either within the app or with a VIP code.

    • I’m actually planning to buy the VIP but it got sold out just yesterday and will only be restocked on October ;;; If I finish the game before then, I might just be satisfied with what I played without the calls ahahaha.

Also, this guide is for those who want to spend as little as possible while getting the most of the story, so I wouldn’t suggest BUYING the calling card.

      • Calling does work with speedplay. I do it all the time. When you speedplay, or have a chatoom unlocked with Hourglasses, the game’s current time is not what your clock says. It changes to be what time the chat is, the one that is currently outlined in green on the game screen. So I got all calls for the day in only 1 real life hour. There is no notification that the time is different though, it just becomes obvious when you make a call that is meant to be at 2 AM and in real life it is actually noon.

        • Oh thanks for the info! I didn’t know this.

          • Yup no problem! : ) Figuring out how this strange game works is my new hobby lol.
