The game is set in Sakurada, a city located in California, USA. Although seemingly peaceful and lively outside, hidden in the dark streets of the city is the illegal trade of a powerful drug called the Rip Cord (it’s not lip code or lip cord jfc). To combat the increasing crime rate caused by the Rip Cord trade, the Sakurada Police formed a special unit called the Side Kicks, with members that each has unique skill sets. One day, after warning people about a truck that will smash through the diner that she is in, ultimately saving everyone, the heroine Inori gets scouted by Side Kicks to have her assist in investigations with her psychic dreams.

This is a non-spoiler review of the game・´∀`・)

Chika (CV: Ishikawa Kaito) is the police-in-training who specialize in martial arts and marksmanship. He looks like he’s always angry with the world but he’s ectually a really kind guy who cares for everyone ;;w;;. He’s always referred to as the 馬鹿–like, he sends messages in all kana because he doesn’t want to use his phone I’M LAUGHING SO MUCH PLEASE SAVE THIS BOY www. As the Ishikawa Kaito tsundere-ish character, Chika is hands-down my best boy (´ε` )♡

Hibari (CV: Yusa Kouji) is a psychiatrist and acts as the group’s profiler because he is very good at analyzing people psychologically. He’s good with words, is thus popular among the women (not to me though ww). He’s another flirty Yusa character, I see…

Shishiba (CV: Shirai Yuusuke) is the resident hacker computer genius. He’s always quiet and says only very few words, but wait until he’s provoked and……*insert fire emoji here* hhuehuehuehue I won’t spill that there’s boob-grabbing in his route (✧≖‿ゝ≖). It seems that he won the character poll and I can totally see why the majority loves him (no, it’s not because the trend that the genius hacker in otome games are always the most popular *cough*Mystic Messenger*cough*CollarxMalice*cough*).

Rico (CV: Aoi Shouta) is the shouta in the group. His special skill is having a camera eye, the ability to remember anything even after just one second of looking at it. Rico acts a bit childish (like, is he really 19 yrs old??) and tbh I’m just meh at him in his route, but he redeemed himself in the final route and I’LL JUST STAY IN A CORNER AND CRY ಥ_ಥ .

Nora (CV: Tomokazu Sugita) is a freelance journalist who gets all the hottest new very fast (where he gets them, only god knows). For some reason, he’s always intruding at the Side Kicks office so the SK members, particularly Chika, kind of dislike him. I don’t really have much to say when it comes to Nora, except that Sugita’s voice is hot as always and that I like Nora’s good boy character design. Oh, and, that Nora in suit looks so dapper I think I fell in love.

Tatewaki (CV: Tsuda Kenjiro) is the leader of the Side Kicks group. He’s always so easygoing and doing whatever he wants that it seems that he’s very unreliable. However, all the Side Kicks members look up to him and are quick to follow his orders because of his good judgment of any situation. His route is locked and is thus played last, and I say it’s really good! The downside is, Tatewaki route is very plot-heavy so there isn’t enough time for romance. Which is really sad because didn’t we play Side Kicks so we can date an ossan voiced by ossan TsudaKen??? щ(ಥДಥщ)

Shisui (CV: Morikubo Shoutaro) is the popular yet mysterious talent who hosts a program show (On-air with S, pronounced as “On e-aa wiz es”) where he broadcasts the latest news happening in Sakurada. He interacts with the characters from time to time, but his main role in the game is just to act as the story-teller. And I’m going to spill this now but I am so disappointed that Shisui doesn’t get a route. I really thought there’s a secret Shisui route! Such a waste of hot Morikubo voice (which we don’t get that often!)! ヽ(≧Д≦)ノ Also, why does he wear his hair like THIS??

The heroine Inori doesn’t have any background, and I’m guessing that this is because the staff wanted to make her a generic otome game heroine that a player can self-insert with. Due to this, she doesn’t stand out as a heroine, but it’s still a good thing that the other characters call her by her name if it’s left on default.

The other characters worth mentioning are Tsubaki, the assistant inspector who considers Tatewaki as a rival, Kurumi, and Tsubaki’s subordinate with big boobs who is voiced by Wingu like wt f  WHYY??

For character ranking, my best boy is of course Chika, followed by ossan Tatewaki, and then all the other capturable guys whom I all love equally.

The moment I opened the Side Kicks game app I was already “oh my god this game is GOOD !!” The animations! The movements in the bg! These are the first things that greeted me when I started on the game, and those were enough to make me have a good first impression of the game.

Okay, the game looks really good. I mean, just look at that takoyaki? I want to eat one just by looking at it?? But as a mystery police otoge, is Side Kicks worth getting? HELL YES.

The the main case is about the Rip Cord and the rain killer, and it gets really interesting especially during the last two locked routes. The reveals are also very unexpected but they make sense and god it’s just so good I LOVE THIS GAME. The only downside is the first four routes (Chika and Hibari route, especially) don’t really touch the main case, as they focus more on character backstory and different separate cases.

I really think it would have been better if the other cases are at least connected to the main case, like Collar×Malice. The route cases are relatively simple (which makes them more realistic, I guess? But then Inori’s psychic dreams aren’t exactly realistic, so…) but they are interesting enough. That didn’t keep me from losing my motivation to play the middle of the game… because I played Chika route first that I was already so contented with my cutie Ishikawa Kaito character ww

The romance is a bit… questionable. The development is so fast in all routes; before you know it, Inori and the guy are suddenly kissing like wait wait hold up why so fast?? But I’m thinking that it’s because the character routes are kind of short, so it’s a bit difficult to put in lots of romance within the plot. In any case, I’m hoping for an FD, with a Shisui route, please (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

One of my favorite things in Side Kicks! is the character interaction. They are so funny and I had lots of good laughs while playing the game XDD (have I mentioned that I love this game?? ww). It helps that the character tropes are too strong: Chika = hot-headed but kind, Hibari = adult flirt, Shishiba = quiet geek, Rico = cutesy shouta, Nora = sawayaka but has lots of secrets, Tatewaki = fun ossan.

Also, the game has a clean and organized system that’s easy to navigate in. They put a lot of effort in the notes (I just wish there’s at least an indication for new and unread notes in the menu list) and Shisui’s Channel “S”. And thumbs up to Morikubo’s singing of the opening and ending themes ♡

Overall, I love Side Kicks! ♡ It’s a well-produced game with good story and nice art. It’s an otome game that I’m sure guys can also enjoy (even Sugita said the same thing!) If you like police otoge (like Collar×Malice), or comedy otoge in general, then Side Kicks! is definitely a must-play. I’m hoping that eXtend will release an FD!

  1. D: this looks super good. and I really only skimmed your review and I am already like “waaahh I wish this one would be localized!” xD

    • If the Collar x Malice localization do well then I hope more people will look into this game! It’s really good and I’m sure everyone will enjoy it ;;w;;

  2. Ooh I want to play this too because of the art. |D But it’s probably not the best idea to play it right after CxM. ;;;;

    • Why though? I think if you liked CxM and are looking for a game like it, playing SK right after CxM is okay (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

      • You think so? I feel like since they’re the same genre, I might compare the two a lot. Like, I might think, “ah CxM does this part better, etc.” I won’t be able to enjoy it SK as it is. That’s why I said that. xD;;;

        • Oh, I’m thinking in a way that you may want more police-related otome game after CxM, so SK is a good pick 😂 CxM is a very memorable game so I think you really can’t help but compare SK with it regardless of when you play the games. CxM might be a bit better but SK is good as well!

  3. I am so pumped to one day play this!! And it seems everyone adores this to some extent thank goodness xD
